Port Adelaide has had three incarnations as a South Australian electoral district. It was first used as district in the Legislative Council
, from 1851 until 1856. From 1856 onwards, it became one of 17 House of Assembly districts, with multi-member representation. In 1938, it became a single member district, until its abolition in 1969. From then until the 2002 state election
, the area was served by the electoral district of Semaphore and the electoral district of Hart
respectively.
Since it became a single member district in 1938, the seat has continually been held by the Australian Labor Party
(ALP), usually with a large margin. Former Rann Labor Treasurer Kevin Foley
held the former seat's incarnation, Hart, since 1993. At the 2006 state election
, Foley increased his margin from 21.7 percent to 25.7 percent, and gained a majority in all booths. Foley announced his parliamentary resignation in 2011 which will create a 2012 Port Adelaide by-election
