Berdyansk is a port city in the Zaporizhia Oblast
(province
) of south-east Ukraine
. Serving as the administrative center of the Berdyansky Raion (district
), the city itself is directly subordinate to the oblast, and is located on the northern coast of the Sea of Azov
.
The current estimated population is around 125,000 (as of 2001).
Berdyansk is known in Ukraine due to its sea port and industries. It is also home to a health resort
with mud bath
s and climatic treatments.
The resort Berdyansk is located along coast of east part of the Berdyansk gulf of sea of Azov. Unique possibilities of health improvement are created by the nature. The level of oxygen in the air of the Azov seacoast is half as much again as in the air of the Black seacoast. It is a cocktail from a sea breeze generously sated with ozone, bromine, iodine and a warm wind with honey aroma of steppe grasses.
Temperature of sea water off Berdyansk is higher than that of the Black Sea coast of Crimea and the Caucasus. Already in May the water is warming up to 22, and in June - up to 30 degrees Celsius.
In spite of the fact that the Berdyansk spit - populous enough territory, its fauna differs of big variety. Here it is possible to meet representatives of mammals, birds, insects, reptiles. In its territory there live hares, hedgehogs, martens, foxes, weasels, steppe cats. Here it is possible to meet a large quantity of birds: geese, sandpipers, swans, herons, ducks, magpies, seagulls, cormorants, warblers, lapwings, red-breasted geese, mute swans. Even more they become during flights. Islands Big and Small Dzendzik, small islands of Astapih's archipelago - serve as the basic locality of birds. Ichthyofauna differs of its variety too. In the sea lives more than 70 species of various fishes among them great sturgeon, Russian sturgeon, starred sturgeon, Azov turbot, haarder, mullets, kilka, anchovy, sea roach, shemaya, various species of gobies. Among the fish there are predators - pike perch and sterlet . The phytoplankton and bethos are most developed. The phytoplankton consists of diatomaceous, peridinium and cyanobacteria algae. At the bottom of the sea the large quantity of the molluscs the main representatives are cockle, sendesmiya, mussel, mya lives. It is the important feed source of fishes. In coastal waters there are dolphins.
Its original name was Kutur-Ogly. The neighbouring settlement arisen due to these foundations was known under the name Berdy. The name of the city was changed to Novo-Nogaisk in 1830 (meant "New Nogaisk") (see Nogai
). Its present name was given to the city in 1841 by the special decree of Nicholas I
. The name "Berdyansk" is derived from the name of the river Berda falling into the sea not far from the city. Between 1939 and 1958 the city was known as Osipenko, named after Hero of the Soviet Union
Polina Osipenko. This name is now used by the nearby village Osipenko, where Polina Osipenko was born.
Solemn opening of a mooring on July, 1st, 1830 has taken place. The authority of new port quickly dews, and in 1835 Berdyansk has received the city status. In 1838 its population consist of 3200 inhabitants, and in 1842 Berdyansk became the district centre. Then, on 31 January 1845, the first arms of Berdyansk and the Berdyansk district have been founded. In the top strip, in a green field a silver nogay's nomad tent and the black plough, meaning a seminomadic life lodged in this district Nogays and employment with tillage of other local residents, and in the bottom part, on a blue field, - a black anchor which symbolised affinity of the given district to the sea are represented. By this time the customs outpost here has been opened. From Mariupol and Odessa some foreign representatives (negotiators) with their offices on purchase and grain sending for the seas-oceans here have moved.
In 1838 the Nizhneberdyansky beacon has been built which representing itself 23-metre octahedral whitestone tower with an orange strip in the middle. The first beacon fires the sailing ships, have seen in 1840. After almost half a century, in 1883, on change to oil lamps the electric have come. The Beacon-veteran reconstructed and equipped with the new equipment, and nowadays keeps watch, showing the way to the ships to native coast.
The city developed and grew. In the centre private residences of the nobility, merchants, priests, office accommodations were built. And on suburbs arose Berdyansk outskirts: Sailor's, German, Soldier's (more known as Liski), the Dog gully, Gavrilovka, Near and Far Makorty. In April, 1862 by tsar Alexander II with assistance of mayor N.Kobozev have been confirmed the plan of district city Berdyansk. By the plan the street were straight and leading to the sea. This layout has remained up to now in the central part of a city. It was forbidden to build houses above the second floor. Fine buildings decorated Berdyansk: Winter theatre, town council building, hotel "Bristol", boys' classical gymnasium, Voznesensky cathedral and Lutheran church. The seaport quickly developed. In 1869 breakwater building has come to the end. This construction made from stone in length of 640 metres with two port fires on the ends - indexes of pass to the harbour, located on distance 859 metres from coast, and until now truly serves for dockers. In the evening when the sun is gone for a breakwater, it can admire from the Seaside square or from quay in the Gorky street. The rumour about a new seaside seaport city was carried far beyond the district. One behind another in Berdyansk appeared trading consulates of Greece, England, Italy, Spain, Austro-Hungary, France, Denmark and other states. The increasing importance of port was underlined in 1867 by the memorable book of Taurian province: "Already there is no doubt, that for all Azov coast the Berdyansk port will be that Odessa for the Black Sea coast".
In 1876 the participant of the Sevastopol defence, rear admiral P.P.Schmidt have been appointed to a post of the town governor and the chief of port. The person of progressive sights, he has made much for port and city development. Everyone who stood at a wheel of the city power, have left the trace in city history. N.S.Kobozev, I.F.Matias, I.F.Gemmerle, V.I.Sahanev, K.P.Konstantinov, K.S.Argiropulo, I.D.Demetriadis, V.E.Gaevsky, V.I.Apopov and other people known at that time, promoted growth and city prosperity. Soon in a city there were small industrial enterprises, banks have opened. In all Europe D.Grievza's factory on manufacturing harvesters was known. Factory of farming machines have opened by Schröder and Matias. There was cordage factory of Venz and Yanzen,Selstrem's candle-wax works Sels, Litsmen sausage factory, Fetter's brewery, Klavdin macaroni factory, Ediger's printing house. Italians have constructed city power station. Berdyansk turned to a port-industrial and trading-merchant city. By this time in the city there were two daily newspapers, three libraries, four bookshops worked. In the city was a waterpipe and illumination. To 1899 Berdyansk has received a railway communication. In the beginning of the XX-th century the city population numbered 26,500. In the city was about ten orthodox temples, two Jewish and one Karaite synagogues, boys and female grammar schools, nautical classes, city college, some credit institutions. Except the extensive export trade which main subject were grain and a flour, Berdyansk conducts large enough inland trade. It becomes the considerable distributive market of the received goods for wide neighbourhood. To the beginning of the twentieth century Berdyansk has got lines of a trading merchant city-port with the developed industry, that, naturally, has affected its infrastructure - in Berdyansk there were newspapers, bookshops and libraries worked, the waterpipe functioned, the city has been electrified, railway building has come to the end.

In the city locate one of the best clinical sanatoriums of Ukraine - sanatorium "Lazurniy" and sanatorium "Berdyansk". They are a part of the largest in the country trade-union organisation Closed Company "Ukrprofzdravnitsa", in particular of its regional branch Closed Company "Priazovkurort". Around sanatoriums locates complex of resort services which renders services in habitation rent for the summer period. The resort has been based in 1902 when have constructed the first wooden mud-baths. And on January, 11th, 2005 by the Law of Ukraine to Berdyansk city appropriates the status of a resort of the state value. One of the main advantages of the Sea of Azov is its moderate-continental climate in combination with the sea air sated with aromas steppe motley grass and salty sea waters. Also it is possible to refer to distinctive features the structure of sea water in which there are 92 chemical elements. All these factors have a good influence on respiratory and cardiovascular systems, on thermoregulation and metabolism, raise vitality. The history has kept numerous certificates on uniqueness of properties of medical mud, for example, in memoirs of outstanding writers Ostap Vishnya and Nikolay Ostrovsky which were patients of the Berdyansk sanatorium.
Even earlier, more than two thousand years ago, about our ancient region and its unique nature "the father of history" Herodotus in the first systematic description wrote of Scythians life who lived in due time on coast of Azov. Complexity of natural medical factors: a climate, the sea, medical mud and mineral water, and also a variety of flora and fauna (more than 4200 kinds of plants and animals), - give to rest unique colour. One of medical factors is mineral underground waters (sodium chloride and iodide-bromine). Their mineralization from 12 to 60 g/l. They are an excellent method of stimulation of different organs and systems, render desensitizing, anti-inflammatory and soothing action. Medical water, named "Berdyanskaya" does not concede to such known salutary mineral waters as "Kuyalnitskaya" and "Mirgorodskaya". Water "Berdyanskaya" stimulates secretory apparatus of digestive tract, makes anti-inflammatory effect, improves formation and bile allocation. It renders beneficial influence at chronic gastritis and pancreatitis, biliary dyskinesia and gallbladder, atonic and enterocolitis, postcholecystectomy syndrome. On the territory of sanatorium work branches of rehabilitation for patients who had acute myocardial infarction, with instable angina pectoris, branches for health improvement of "future mums", for rehabilitation after a thermal trauma, after operative interventions on digestion organs. Successfully functions buildings for treatment of diseases of locomotive system, cerebrovascular pathologies, liver and biliary, pathologies of reproductive function, diabetes, respiratory organs. On a mountain slope the zoo, near far from it the whole year open exhibition-club of aquarian fishes and reptiles is located, on the Seaside square the mobile amusement park all the summer long works, between Sailor's outskirt and the Berdyansk spit the biggest on the territory of the former USSR an aquapark settles down, on the third beach there is a small town of children's attractions.The whole year round the circus troupes with tours come to Berdyansk
The infrastructure of rest and entertainments in Berdyansk is the most developed on the Azov seashore and with success competes to resorts of Black Sea Coast and Crimea. In Berdyansk and its vicinities the big number of sanatoriums, resorts, rest houses where, besides rest it is possible to pass medical and restorative courses of health improvement.
Only on the Berdyansk spit are located about 70 health improving establishments: 7 sanatoriums, 17 children's and sports establishments, 45 recreation centres, boarding houses which can simultaneously receive up to 15 thousand persons. In Berdyansk on rather small territory guests can receive a wide range of tourist services: the biggest Aquapark in Europe and the Kiev delphinarium, the biggest in the CIS countries a zoo and most beautiful of all resort cities the Seaside square, a lot of pleasure and cultural establishments. Gradually Berdyansk takes a form of a modern European city. In 2001 it has received the first place in All-Ukrainian competition on the best beautification.
By pedestrian area of Lenin Avenue, the Seaside square and quays of Berdyansk it is possible to drive on trishaws, small steam locomotive and on the real horses. On all beaches, including and the Berdyansk spit,guests can take advantage of large quantity of entertainments: driving on rubber bananas and tablets, water bicycles and motorcycles, walks on boats and yachts, driving from slides and trampolines. In the evening it is possible to have a rest in bars, restaurants, more of them have summer platforms which located directly on the seacoast.
Chemical and the petroleum-refining industry in a city is presented by two big enterprises: Public corporation"AZMOL", the Berdyansk state factory of fiberglass, and also two small enterprises: Limited Liability Company "Fibreglass", Closed Corporation "Bertie".
Public corporation"AZMOL"is engaged in manufacture and realisation of lubricants, manufacturing of container for their packaging and packing. Expansion of assortment of lubricants, development and introduction of new highly effective and competitive products with application of energy-efficient technologies is planned. Works on container and packing perfection, expansion of their assortment proceed . Search of new business partners will proceed. Perspective directions of expansion of outlets for the enterprise are the countries of Africa and Asia. Building of experimental wind-driver power station is supposed. Transfer into the municipal property of the city of plant of biological sewage treatment is planned.
The Berdyansk state factory of fiberglass specialises on manufacture of fiberglass and products from it. In the long term enterprise developments stand problems of re-equipment of manufacture, such as:
- Purchase of modern technological lines for end production release;
- Replacement physically and the obsolete process equipment on more high-efficiency;
- Introduction energy-efficient technologies on recycling of emissions of heat and recycled water.
Limited Liability Company "Fibreglass", specialises on release of roofing felt, fibreglasses etc. The enterprise has mastered release of mesh for plastering, the cable yarn, reinforcing materials for manufacture of plastic.
Closed Corporation "Bertie". specialises on release of general mechanical rubber goods. In the near future introduction of new technologies is planned.

Public corporation "Berdyansk harvesters" is the basic manufacturer in Ukraine of equipment for separate harvest of grain and bean cultures. Enterprise activity is directed on manufacture of harvesters of four principal models and modifications.
Public corporation "Factory"Yuzhgidromash" " manufactures pumps centrifugal, feeding, submersible, chemical, console, special, oil pumps.
Public corporation "Dormash" specialises on release of self-propelled small-sized loaders with scale of the hinged equipment, quality and reliability of these loaders correspond to level of the world standards.
Public corporation "Azovcable" specialises on release and realisation cable production: power cables, control cables,ship cables, long-distance communication cables, mine cables, wires adjusting, lighting cords.

For manufacture maintenance with own raw materials and increase in release of grape wine it is planned to plant vineyards in the area of 100 hectares .
Public corporation "Berdyansk bread-baking plant" specialises on manufacturing of bread, bakery, confectionery and pasta.
Public corporation "Berdyansk complex of bakeries" specialises on processing of wheat and flour manufacturing.
Limited Liability Company "Berdyansk sausages" specialises on meat processing, manufacturing of sausage products, food fats, dry animal forages.
Subsidiary enterprise "Canning shop" specialises on manufacture meat, fish and mixed canned food.
There is a number of other small enterprises in the city specialising on meat processing, manufacturing of meat and sausage products, such as Limited Liability Company "Avanta", small-scale enterprise "Mercury" also functions. The enterprises specialising on manufacture of bread and bakery products, such as private enterprise "Podolyanka", private enterprise "Contour", private enterprise "Terra", Limited Liability Company "Palyanytsa", Limited Liability Company "agrarian and industrial complex"Kolos", private enterprise "Ovakimyan R. M." and others.
The industry of building materials is presented by Public corporation "Berdyansk factory of ferro-concrete products" which specialises on release of precast concrete, concrete solutions and products from it, including: blocks of walls of the cellars, not reinforced concrete products.
One of the main filling the city budget enterprises is the Berdyansk sea trading port. It is unique sea transport knot of the Zaporozhye region and one of dynamically developing ports on the Sea of Azov on processing of export-import, transit and coasting cargoes. It carries out metal processing, ìåòàëëîêîíñòðóêöèé, scrap metal, grain, coal, ore, clay, sunflower-seed oil, industrial oils, mineral oil, pig-iron, containers. The port is located in a northeast part of the Berdyansk gulf. From the sea the port is protected by a breakwater. In its territory are: a complex on processing of mineral fertilizers, a complex on processing of mineral oil, the container terminal, moorings, railway depot. Tracks and automobile entrances approach to all moorings of port. All moorings are equipped by electric cranes. Depth in port water area makes 8,4 m. Clients and business partners of port are not only in Ukraine, but also in the CIS countries, Europe, Asia, Africa and Americas. Navigation in port lasts all year long.
Berdyansk is important fisheries centre of the country and makes powerful impact on development of fisheries sector of the country's economy. Existing fisheries and fish-processing enterprises are integral part of food industry. In the city successfully functions one of the leading scientific organisations which is executing fish researches in reservoirs of the Azov basin. Now "Azov centre YugNIRO" is the traditional executor of the state orders by definition of stocks and annual volumes of withdrawal from the Sea of Azov such valuable food fishes as sturgeon, pike perch, haarder, Azov turbot, Azov gobies, flounder, ordinary fish.

Some of them are brought into the Red Book (for example Carex colchica, Åryngium maritimum, Glycyrrhiza glabra ). History
Berdyansk city by its birth is obliged to earl Vorontsov whom being again appointed the governor general, has sent expedition to the Sea of Azov. Expedition's task was to find a place for building of new seaport. In the autumn of 1824 the captain Kritsky, supervising this expedition, in the report has informed on several prospective places, but the best was a place closed from the sea by the Berdyansk Spit. In an official report to Vorontsov Kritsky has written: "the Berdyansk Spit surpasses extremely by quality Obitochnaya Spit, and on it you can get landing stage and port which unless will concede to Sevastopol..." And here on 3 November 1827 the certificate about dissociation of the land for a mooring and a city has been issued. From this day also conducts the family tree Berdyansk. Same year on the bank of a gulf the landing stage has been built. Has grown here and the small settlement which has begun the future city.Its original name was Kutur-Ogly. Solemn opening of a mooring on July, 1st, 1830 has taken place. The authority of new port quickly dews, and in 1835 Berdyansk has received the city status. In 1838 its population consist of 3200 inhabitants, and in 1842 Berdyansk became the district centre. Then, on 31 January 1845, the first arms of Berdyansk and the Berdyansk district have been founded. In the top strip, in a green field a silver nogay's nomad tent and the black plough, meaning a seminomadic life lodged in this district Nogays and employment with tillage of other local residents, and in the bottom part, on a blue field, - a black anchor which symbolised affinity of the given district to the sea are represented. By this time the customs outpost here has been opened. From Mariupol and Odessa some foreign representatives (negotiators) with their offices on purchase and grain sending for the seas-oceans here have moved.
In 1838 the Nizhneberdyansky beacon has been built which representing itself 23-metre octahedral whitestone tower with an orange strip in the middle. The first beacon fires the sailing ships, have seen in 1840. After almost half a century, in 1883, on change to oil lamps the electric have come. The Beacon-veteran reconstructed and equipped with the new equipment, and nowadays keeps watch, showing the way to the ships to native coast.
The city developed and grew. In the centre private residences of the nobility, merchants, priests, office accommodations were built. And on suburbs arose Berdyansk outskirts: Sailor's, German, Soldier's (more known as Liski), the Dog gully, Gavrilovka, Near and Far Makorty. In April, 1862 by tsar Alexander II with assistance of mayor N.Kobozev have been confirmed the plan of district city Berdyansk. By the plan the street were straight and leading to the sea. This layout has remained up to now in the central part of a city. It was forbidden to build houses above the second floor. Fine buildings decorated Berdyansk: Winter theatre, town council building, hotel "Bristol", boys' classical gymnasium, Voznesensky cathedral and Lutheran church. The seaport quickly developed. In 1869 breakwater building has come to the end. This construction made from stone in length of 640 metres with two port fires on the ends - indexes of pass to the harbour, located on distance 859 metres from coast, and until now truly serves for dockers. In the evening when the sun is gone for a breakwater, it can admire from the Seaside square or from quay in the Gorky street. The rumour about a new seaside seaport city was carried far beyond the district. One behind another in Berdyansk appeared trading consulates of Greece, England, Italy, Spain, Austro-Hungary, France, Denmark and other states. The increasing importance of port was underlined in 1867 by the memorable book of Taurian province: "Already there is no doubt, that for all Azov coast the Berdyansk port will be that Odessa for the Black Sea coast".
In 1876 the participant of the Sevastopol defence, rear admiral P.P.Schmidt have been appointed to a post of the town governor and the chief of port. The person of progressive sights, he has made much for port and city development. Everyone who stood at a wheel of the city power, have left the trace in city history. N.S.Kobozev, I.F.Matias, I.F.Gemmerle, V.I.Sahanev, K.P.Konstantinov, K.S.Argiropulo, I.D.Demetriadis, V.E.Gaevsky, V.I.Apopov and other people known at that time, promoted growth and city prosperity. Soon in a city there were small industrial enterprises, banks have opened. In all Europe D.Grievza's factory on manufacturing harvesters was known. Factory of farming machines have opened by Schröder and Matias. There was cordage factory of Venz and Yanzen,Selstrem's candle-wax works Sels, Litsmen sausage factory, Fetter's brewery, Klavdin macaroni factory, Ediger's printing house. Italians have constructed city power station. Berdyansk turned to a port-industrial and trading-merchant city. By this time in the city there were two daily newspapers, three libraries, four bookshops worked. In the city was a waterpipe and illumination. To 1899 Berdyansk has received a railway communication. In the beginning of the XX-th century the city population numbered 26,500. In the city was about ten orthodox temples, two Jewish and one Karaite synagogues, boys and female grammar schools, nautical classes, city college, some credit institutions. Except the extensive export trade which main subject were grain and a flour, Berdyansk conducts large enough inland trade. It becomes the considerable distributive market of the received goods for wide neighbourhood. To the beginning of the twentieth century Berdyansk has got lines of a trading merchant city-port with the developed industry, that, naturally, has affected its infrastructure - in Berdyansk there were newspapers, bookshops and libraries worked, the waterpipe functioned, the city has been electrified, railway building has come to the end.

Resort
Development of Berdyansk as resort predetermine its unique natural-climatic conditions: a seaside steppe climate, warm Sea of Azov with fine-sand beaches, therapeutic muds, mineral sodium chloride and iodide-bromine underground waters, and of course, the sea water containing 92 chemical elements. The city has won a recognition at tourists as one of the best resorts for sea rest.In the city locate one of the best clinical sanatoriums of Ukraine - sanatorium "Lazurniy" and sanatorium "Berdyansk". They are a part of the largest in the country trade-union organisation Closed Company "Ukrprofzdravnitsa", in particular of its regional branch Closed Company "Priazovkurort". Around sanatoriums locates complex of resort services which renders services in habitation rent for the summer period. The resort has been based in 1902 when have constructed the first wooden mud-baths. And on January, 11th, 2005 by the Law of Ukraine to Berdyansk city appropriates the status of a resort of the state value. One of the main advantages of the Sea of Azov is its moderate-continental climate in combination with the sea air sated with aromas steppe motley grass and salty sea waters. Also it is possible to refer to distinctive features the structure of sea water in which there are 92 chemical elements. The history has kept numerous certificates on uniqueness of properties of medical mud, for example, in memoirs of outstanding writers Ostap Vishnya and Nikolay Ostrovsky which were patients of the Berdyansk sanatorium.
Even earlier, more than two thousand years ago, about our ancient region and its unique nature "the father of history" Herodotus in the first systematic description wrote of Scythians life who lived in due time on coast of Azov. Berdyansk differs by its uncommon monuments. Today it is possible to assert safely, that Berdyansk, Berdyansk region and Berdyansk spit are one of most ecologically pure regions of Ukraine. These changes have aloud affected change of the status of the city. Berdyansk from "Industrial centre" becomes "tourist". Today Berdyansk - the main city-resort of the Azov coast. Its population numbers about 130 thousand persons, and during a resort season this figure rises to a mark of 600 thousand.The infrastructure of rest and entertainments in Berdyansk is the most developed on the Azov seashore and with success competes to resorts of Black Sea Coast and Crimea. In Berdyansk and its vicinities the big number of sanatoriums, resorts, rest houses where, besides rest it is possible to pass medical and restorative courses of health improvement.
Only on the Berdyansk spit are located about 70 health improving establishments: 7 sanatoriums, 17 children's and sports establishments, 45 recreation centres, boarding houses which can simultaneously receive up to 15 thousand persons. In Berdyansk on rather small territory guests can receive a wide range of tourist services: the biggest Aquapark in Europe and the Kiev delphinarium, the biggest in the CIS countries a zoo and most beautiful of all resort cities the Seaside square, a lot of pleasure and cultural establishments. Gradually Berdyansk takes a form of a modern European city. In 2001 it has received the first place in All-Ukrainian competition on the best beautification.
By pedestrian area of Lenin Avenue, the Seaside square and quays of Berdyansk it is possible to drive on trishaws, small steam locomotive and on the real horses. On all beaches, including and the Berdyansk spit,guests can take advantage of large quantity of entertainments: driving on rubber bananas and tablets, water bicycles and motorcycles, walks on boats and yachts, driving from slides and trampolines. Considering that the Berdyansk develops as a city-resort, relative density considerably increases in the general release of a commodity output of the enterprises food and a process industry, the enterprises of light industry and the enterprises of a machine-building complex at the expense of reorientation to release of the consumer goods. Expansion of assortment of lubricants, development and introduction of new highly effective and competitive products with application of energy-efficient technologies is planned. One of the main filling the city budget enterprises is the Berdyansk sea trading port. It is unique sea transport knot of the Zaporozhye region and one of dynamically developing ports on the Sea of Azov on processing of export-import, transit and coasting cargoes. It carries out metal processing, ìåòàëëîêîíñòðóêöèé, scrap metal, grain, coal, ore, clay, sunflower-seed oil, industrial oils, mineral oil, pig-iron, containers. The port is located in a northeast part of the Berdyansk gulf. From the sea the port is protected by a breakwater. In its territory are: a complex on processing of mineral fertilizers, a complex on processing of mineral oil, the container terminal, moorings, railway depot. Tracks and automobile entrances approach to all moorings of port. All moorings are equipped by electric cranes. Depth in port water area makes 8,4 m. Clients and business partners of port are not only in Ukraine, but also in the CIS countries, Europe, Asia, Africa and Americas. Navigation in port lasts all year long.
Berdyansk is important fisheries centre of the country and makes powerful impact on development of fisheries sector of the country's economy. Existing fisheries and fish-processing enterprises are integral part of food industry. In the city successfully functions one of the leading scientific organisations which is executing fish researches in reservoirs of the Azov basin. Now "Azov centre YugNIRO" is the traditional executor of the state orders by definition of stocks and annual volumes of withdrawal from the Sea of Azov such valuable food fishes as sturgeon, pike perch, haarder, Azov turbot, Azov gobies, flounder, ordinary fish.

In Berdyansk preschool, secondary and higher educational institutions function. Except the state comprehensive schools there are private lyceums and gymnasiums. Despite the small sizes of the city and small number of local population, there are the state pedagogical university, Azov Regional Institute of Management and UNIVERSITY OF MANAGEMENT AND BUSINESS in Berdyansk.
