He learned to draw at Annan Academy
. He was accepted into training by the Royal Scottish Academy
at the age of 14 and was submitting work to the RSA Annual Exhibition by the next year, a trend he continued until his death with the exception of 1864, when he went to Australia for his health and 1889–90 when he was painting The Jubilee Celebration in Westminster Abbey, June 21, 1887 by the Royal family and now in the Royal Collection.
50 years after his birth he was commissioned by Queen Victoria to paint the celebration of her jubilee in Westminster Abbey
