Social-Organization and Service Club (SOS)

SOS is now the largest after-school club at Wake Forest-Rolesville Middle School. The club's mission is to focus on teaching students citizenship and to be proud Americans. Dance Marathon is the biggest endeavor SOS undertakes each year. Besides organizing this large charity event at the school, members learn how to run the project much like a small business using free enterprise to accomplish their goals. Students learn how to solicit sponsorship, how to plan the budget, how to determine project needs vs. project wants, and how to make business involvement a win for all participants. SOS publicizes the event in the school and community via posters, video commercials, and press releases. SOS club supervisor Michael Meyer has organized this project in three North Carolina middle schools.

Besides Dance Marathon, SOS does some other service in the community such as helping elementary school students with their academics and singing to older citizens of the town at Christmas.

WF-RMS Dance Marathon

Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, students at Cedar Creek Middle School (Franklin County) wanted to do something to give back to our wounded nation. Students planned the event and raised $6,686.71. The event took off at Cedar Creek and went on to raise $30,000 in three years for Duke Children’s Miracle Network and The United Way of Franklin County. Hawfields Middle School (Alamance County) picked up the project in 2005 raising over $10,000 in a little over one year for Duke CMN and The United Way of Alamance County.

Starting in 2006, WF-RMS began a Dance Marathon

. The students raised $58,000 since this time, bringing the total amongst the three middle schools to $98,000.

WF-RMS has partnered with several universities on Dance Marathon. UNC-Chapel Hill, Penn State University, and Elon University have all teamed up with WF-RMS students to make Dance Marathon better each year. The SOS Club has traveled to Penn State's THON (www.thon.org) two years in a row to get a behind the scenes tour of the largest student run philanthropy in the world. In 2008, the club left a memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania to honor the victims of United Airlines Flight 93

The NEW Wake Forest Dance Marathon

In the fall of 2009, the SOS Club decided to discontinue Dance Marathon as a WF-RMS event. However, the event was moved across the street to The Factory, which allowed students from more middle schools to participate. The local Rotary Club of Wake Forest took over the finances of the dance marathon and serves as the main sponsor. The basic premise remains the same. SOS still organizes the Dance Marathon except it is now a town charity event as opposed to just an event for the one school. The move to The Factory opened several possibilities for this event. The facility is much larger as the indoor soccer field serves as the main dance floor. In addition to this, The MVP Sports Factory offers basketball, volleyball, 4 square, and a small indoor soccer area for additional activities during the dance marathon. SOS rents out the entire facility for the evening so all of these activities are included in the minimum donation required of each dancer.

The new location caused the name of the event to change to "The NEW Wake Forest Dance Marathon." The theme of the first 2010 event was Hollywood. While only 250 students had registered the night before, over 450 dancers showed up. Over 200 dancers paid at the door, which helped the event raise $18,000 in the first year. Even in a down economy, the event has always at least matched the previous year's total. The goal for the 2011 event is $20,000. The SOS club voted on a Glow in the Dark theme for this year's event, which is slated for Friday, June 3rd, 2011.
