. It is the largest higher education institution by student population in the northwest of the country, and the second in Colombia, with more than 34,096 students. The university was established by a Royal Decree of February 9, 1801 under the name of Franciscan College , by King Charles IV of Spain
, and started its operation in 1803 under the direction of Friar
Rafael de la Serna. It has changed its name several times until December 14, 1871, when it acquired its current name. The university is spread among several locations in Medellín, being the main one the campus known as the University City of Medellín located in the northern part of the city. Other locations are Robledo Citadel located in the northwest, the Health Area which includes the "San Vicente de Paúl" University Hospital , and the San Ignacio Building, both located in downtown Medellín. The university has 14 faculties, 4 schools, 4 institutes, and 4 corporations, that offer 68 undergraduate

Along with providing facilities for the development of scientific and technological projects, the purpose of the SIU is to encourage interdisciplinary work, promote synergy between the member groups, and cooperation between the local and national research community and researchers in other countries.

Campus
The university is spread in several campus and buildings in the city, being the main one the University City of Medellín. Other campuses are the Robledo Citadel located in the northwestern neighborhood of Robledo, the Health Area located nearby the "San Vicente de Paúl" University Hospital. Nearby the Health Area is located the Archeology Laboratory in the neighborhood of Prado, and the downtown is located San Ignacio Building, which is the historical location of the university and home of the extension programs of the faculty of Languages, and the Law Consultation offices of the University; and the Suramericana Building, where is located the International Center of Languages and Cultures. Nearby the CUM is located the Extension Building and the Leon XIII Clinic, acquired in 2007 by the university, and managed by the university health provider institution. There is a project for the construction of a postgraduate building in the old location of the Departmental Secretary of Transportation.Research
The University has a wide and big research activity with many research groups in each Colciencias categories (A1, A, B, C and D). The majority of excellence groups (A1, A and B) are concentrate in the university research building which is an advanced project created by the University of Antioquia to promote a qualitative and quantitative transformation of its research system. Through the SIU, the University plans to contribute to the knowledge society by making research, innovation and technological development pillars for the construction of a fairer and more competitive Colombia.University Research Building
Within the SIU there are currently 36 research groups of excellence, classified by Colciencias as categories A and B, working in diverse areas such as biotechnology, chemistry, materials science, genetics, environment, immunology, infectious and tropical diseases, among others. All of these groups carry out high quality research that contributes to the status of the University of Antioquia as a research university.Along with providing facilities for the development of scientific and technological projects, the purpose of the SIU is to encourage interdisciplinary work, promote synergy between the member groups, and cooperation between the local and national research community and researchers in other countries.
