History

UNE was founded on September 2, 1970 by a group of local doctors who were inspired with new ideas for a better education in Mexico

It was first named "Instituto de Ciencias Biologicas del Noreste" (Biological Sciences Institute of the Northeast), and it started with the School of Medicine named after its founder "Dr. Jose Sierra Flores".

In the '90s, continuing with the innovative spirit in education, UNE established its preparatory school, "Prepa UNE", a school with high standards of education that prepares its students to succeed in college and university, helping them to accomplish their educational and personal goals by developing effective learning skills. During this decade UNE was accredited by the Federation of Private Mexican Institutions of Higher Education (FIMPES).

In the new millennium, UNE faced new challenges which were represented in the social and political environments. In 2000, UNE started with its "Modern Educational Plan 2000"; during this year, being on the cutting-edge of higher education, UNE opened the Foreign Language Center.

In 2005, UNE received accreditation by the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES).

In 2007, the School of Medicine opened the Teaching Center of Medical Aptitudes and Skills (CEDAM), the first Medical Simulation Center in Tamaulipas

In 2010, CEDAM was relocated to a bigger and better facility, acquiring the newest robotic equipment so that young doctors, nurses and nutritionists (students from the Department of Health Sciences) could work together at the Medical Simulation Center, giving them more confidence and improving their skills in their respective subject areas.

UNE continues making history, consolidating itself as an Institution of Higher Education focused on academic excellence. Today UNE is well recognized locally, nationally and internationally for its innovative and high quality education, especially the School of Medicine "Dr. Jose Sierra Flores".

UNE School of Medicine

The UNE School of Medicine is fully recognized and approved by the government of Mexico to confer the degree of Physician-Surgeon upon students who fulfill the school requirements and complete the prescribed curriculum. The UNE School of Medicine has been recognized many times for academic and clinical training; one of these is the accreditation by the Mexican Council for the Accreditation of Medical Education (COMAEM). . CEDAM is a Medical Simulation Center in which students can practice medical procedures with robotic patients, improving their skills.

In 2010, CEDAM was relocated to a bigger and better facility, acquiring the newest robotic equipment so that young doctors, nurses and nutritionists (students from the Department of Health Sciences), could work together at the Medical Simulation Center, giving them more confidence and improving their skills in their respective working area.

It is the real hospital environment that allows students to feel comfortable and secure giving them the opportunity to solve their doubts by allowing them to practice in robotic patients. All of these practices, both simple and complex assignments, are supervised by their professors, all of whom are MDs.

However, clinical training practiced in CEDAM does not substitute the real clinical training in hospitals which is indeed more important.
