console. The game is part of the Trauma Center series by Atlus. The game was released on May 18, 2010 in North America.

Trauma Team includes a range of medical procedures including paramedic work, diagnostics and forensics, each performed by one of the game's six protagonists.

Plot

The first half of the game begins with six separate plot threads for each of the six main characters, and each character's levels deals with a personal story. CR-S01, an amnesiac convicted mass-murderer and skilled surgeon, is given the chance to reduce his sentence by performing surgery at Resurgam Medical Facility. His story involves his coming to terms with saving lives despite believing that he has taken away so many. Maria Torres, the first responder, struggles with her inability to ask for help and her need to take everything upon herself. Gabriel Cunningham, the diagnostician, ultimately deals with his failings as a father. Resurgam's orthopedic surgeon Hank Freebird struggles with the concept of heroism and how to live up to the expectations he sets for himself. Tomoe Tachibana, Resurgam's endoscopic surgeon, deals with her unease over leaving a prominent ninja clan in Japan to be a doctor in America. Finally, the former master surgeon and forensics medical examiner Naomi Kimishima must come to terms with her terminal illness while assisting the FBI with some unique and sometimes disturbing cases. Throughout the different stories, each character encounters patients with a strange set of alarming symptoms, such as black bruises on many vital organs, recurring tumor formation, and vicious fevers.

The main story progresses without many complications, as seemingly ordinary procedures are carried out starting off when a notorious drug smuggler comes into town and putting many characters on the case, regular diseases are discovered, and ordinary cases are solved. However, over the course of the game, unusual cases are found, like strange foci and moving bruises appearing in the patient. At the same time, Naomi's cases get more and more complex as the killers and victims become associated with the name "Rosalia". This doesn't become a problem until all chapters are finished, and the seventh chapter is unlocked: Patient Zero.

The chaos begins one day with a woman coming out of a subway train, who suddenly collapses. This is when the Rosalia Virus begins to strike. Maria begins stabilizing patients at the stop with Hank's help. Gabriel is ordered to diagnose a patient by a government official, and finds it to be a form of viral hemorrhagic fever.

Resurgam is soon flooded with patients, with operations already going underway, and almost nearly every place quarantined, including the prison where CR-S01 is. The prison was going to move the people to a new place, but CR-S01's guard collapses in front of him and he realizes that the virus has already spread to the prison. When he tells another guard nearby that the prison has already been infected, the guard instead thinks that CR-S01 infected the guard with the disease. CR-S01 then escapes and goes to a nearby hospital to see how bad the situation is. While he was there, a man collapses. Maria later makes it to the hospital where she supports CR-S01 in the man's operation. After completing the operation, CR-S01 passes out. When he wakes up, he said that he regained his memories and remembers everything.

As it turns out, his adoptive father and professor at the Cumberland College, Albert Sartre, was behind the incident. Albert was researching the virus that was supposed to wipe out illnesses but turned out to be too aggressive. According to CR-S01, they should be able to find a cure by cultivating blood from the host, his adopted sister and Maria's friend, Rosalia.

Meanwhile, Tomoe notes that Chloe, Alyssa's cat, has some inflammations in her mouth, and begins operating to extract the foreign objects. However, under the foreign objects, which turns out to be shards of bone, she discovers virus colonies that explode and form the same bruise caused by the Rosalia Virus. Then, Gabriel was ordered to deliver bones that the government thinks is connected to the virus to the hospital for Naomi to reconstruct, but when the officials say his landing will be "safe", he is dropped unexpectedly into a garbage container. When Naomi reassembles the bone, according to her, the victim died of the Rosalia Virus and the skeleton matches Albert's.

With Rosalia's blood being the only hope to cure the Rosalia Virus, Maria and Naomi head to Mexico to find Rosalia's body, while the rest stay behind at Resurgam to treat the Rosalia victims flowing in. There, Naomi determined Rosalia's cause of death, and discovered that while her blood could not be used, the flowers around her had absorbed her blood and can be used to develop an antiserum. Also as it turns out, the truth of the virus is that Monarch Butterflies stored the absorbed blood in the flowers with the virus and during their migration pattern, their shedding scales spread the virus, which is why the quarantine didn't work.

Back at Resurgam, Tomoe struggles to treat a patient infected with the Rosalia Virus, using a makeshift method to extract the virus colonies without causing them to burst. However, after treating the virus colony, several other unseen ones begin bursting and spreading the Rosalia bruise. Then, Maria arrives back at Resurgam with the newly developed antiserum, allowing for Tomoe to successfully treat the Rosalia Virus.

Just when things seem to be fine, however, Naomi collapses. A diagnosis reveals that she too had been infected with the Rosalia Virus, and it mutated with her genetic disease to become the Twisted Rosalia. With some advice from Derek Stiles, the final battle begins as the Twisted Rosalia is treated within Naomi's heart by CR-S01.

After a successful operation, Naomi regains consciousness, and Tomoe reveals that the genetic disease afflicting Naomi had also been cured with the Rosalia Virus, allowing for her to continue looking after Alyssa. The other doctors had returned to their previous lives - Maria continues to argue with the paramedics; Hank had become close friends with his former patient, Claire, along with resuming his superhero identity; Gabriel continues his work as usual with as much frustration from RONI; and CR-S01 was returned to prison, but still gets called upon to perform surgeries across the country, as his release requirements were changed.

At the end of the credits, Gabriel is seen on the roof. He then thanks the player for their hard work across the entire game. The camera pans up to the sky and a message is shown, telling the player that they are, truly, the seventh member of the Trauma Team.

Gameplay

The game features six fields of medicine. Throughout the game, players will have the opportunity to play as a general surgeon, diagnostician, emergency medical technician
Emergency medical technician

, orthopedic surgeon, medical examiner

, and endoscopy

surgeon. Atlus is releasing walkthrough videos for the different fields of medicine in the game. This new installment will run a new engine allowing 3D rotation of the patient's body in some operations. Upon starting the game, there are two difficulty levels. Upon completing the game, a harder difficulty is unlocked. Another feature unlocked upon completing the game is the Doctor Medal awards system. Doctor Medals are awarded by completing certain tasks in each episode and each medal slot has a hint as to how to complete each goal.

In Surgery, the player must save a patient using a number of tools to take care of hemorrhages, tumors, cuts, abnormalities and foreign objects while keeping the patient's vitals above 0. In multiplayer, the tools are distributed amongst the two players, allowing each player to concentrate on specific tasks.

During Endoscopy, the player controls an endoscopic tube to reach normally inaccessible places inside the body and perform the procedure from there. The endoscope can be moved around and pushed further using the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. The endoscope itself is equipped with a light to see inside the patient's body as well as a radar to locate any abnormalities not seen. However, if the endoscope itself hits any walls in the body, the patient loses vitals. Tools used are brought up and used with the Nunchuck. In multiplayer, one player has control over the endoscope and tools while the other operates the endoscopic light. The active player will switch back and forth after a set amount of time has elapsed.

Orthopedics has the player repairing bone structure. Because of the delicate nature of orthopedic surgery, the Vitals meter is replaced with a limit counter and failure will occur if too many mistakes are made. Tools are given to use as they are needed so there is no need to switch between them. In multiplayer, each player is responsible for each step and control switches after each step or if the current player makes a mistake.

Forensics involves solving a murder case and using a series of clues to figure out how the person was killed and possibly who killed them. Every case begins with the victim's final moments through Naomi's cell phone. While searching the crime scene, important facts uncovered will be put in cards which will be used to piece together clues. Autopsies will also help deduce abnormalities which will also provide clues. Clues can also be sent to Little Guy, a confidant of Naomi's in the FBI, who will analyze each clue as well as interview witnesses and suspects. During the investigation, the player will have to answer a series of questions pertaining to a clue. A correct answer will allow the player to obtain more information on the subject, but if a mistake is made, then it will be deducted from the limit counter and the case will be thrown out if too many errors are made. There is no scoring system in Forensics and difficulty is not taken into account.

First Response plays like the Surgery aspect of the game but at a much faster pace. Rather than simply saving the patient, the goal is to stabilize them to be transported to the hospital. Due to the non-sterile nature of the outside environment, the basic tool selection is simplified and more situational tools and techniques may be used, like scissors to cut clothing. In most occasions, multiple patients must be treated at once and even more patients may be brought in over time. The player can switch patients at any time during the operation. In addition to the Vitals meter of the patient currently being treated, there are also icons representing other patients with red, yellow and green tags representing their Vitals. Typically patients will also explain ailments they are experiencing to help give the player an idea of what to expect. First Response also expects patients to be lost while treating other patients due to the hectic nature of the operation. If a patient does die, it takes away from a limit counter and the operation fails if too many patients die. In multiplayer, each player is assigned to a patient and can only work on that patient if the main patient is switched to them.

In Diagnosis, the player must gather clues to figure out the patient's ailment so it can be treated. The patient will explain their symptoms, requiring the player to figure out whether or not it is an appropriate ailment, though sometimes they will not explicitly state it, and may even hide information. Running tests on the patient will also help deduce even more possible symptoms. By putting in the symptoms in Gabriel's computer, a list of possible diagnosis will show. Matching the symptoms to the diagnosis will fill a meter, if the meter is full, then the appropriate diagnosis will be concluded. During the diagnosis, if an abnormality is falsely assumed, it takes away from the limit counter and the diagnosis will be thrown out if there are too many errors. Typically a diagnosis chapter will occur in several stages to find what caused a specific ailment. In between stages, all misses accumulated will reset and a patient's condition may worsen. There is no scoring system in Diagnosis and difficulty is not taken into account.

CR-S01

This young surgeon was apparently involved in a bioterror attack on Cumberland University that killed several people, during which he lost his memory but not his impressive surgical skills. He goes by CR-S01, his prison number. While serving a 250-year sentence for the atrocity he can't remember committing, he was approached by the government with an unusual offer: perform difficult surgeries in exchange for commuted sentence time. Besieged by guilt over his apparent inhumanity, he now turns his sights towards redeeming himself through helping others. The Atlus-endorsed artbook and strategy guide for Trauma Team (note: published only in Japan) reveals his true name to be Erhard/Erhardt Muller.

Gabriel Cunningham

long ago grew tired of being the best and brightest diagnostician at Resurgam, and while his ability to quickly and accurately identify his patients' ailments hasn't dulled a bit, his ability to care about the people he's helping is falling to an all-time low. Quick-witted and always ready with a caustic comment, Gabriel is an easy man to like, but a hard man to know.

Hank Freebird

A gentle giant in every sense of the word, 's soft-spoken demeanor belies his strong sense of duty and honor. After receiving an honorable discharge from the United States Army, in which he served with distinction, Hank became an orthopedic surgeon to better help the people in his community.

Naomi Kimishima

, previously a master surgeon, (from the previous game, Trauma Center: Second Opinion) had her career cut short due to an irredeemable mistake she had made years before, and now she has been diagnosed with a terminal and incurable disease. Though she is unable to operate any more, she has gained a mysterious power (hearing the dead's final words through her cell phone) that she uses while working at the Cumberland Institute of Forensic Medicine (CIFM) as a forensic examiner, quietly waiting for her own life to end. As sad as it may seem, Naomi plays an intense but brilliantly cast forensics expert. With her life hanging on on a thread, she is perfect for this job. She has given up on life, and as she waits to join the ranks of corpses that she sees every day, perhaps something will give her the hope and the strength to go on... She was hired by the FBI to help solve a series of heinous murders. Can Naomi find the outlook of her short life before it ends as well?

Maria Torres

is always the first to act in any situation, but is also the first to overreact to any perceived threat. This fiery spirit serves her well as an EMT for Resurgam while distancing her from her fellow doctors. Having little patience for anybody else, Maria's always been headstrong and difficult to work with. When she finds out that CR-S01 was apparently behind the Cumberland College incident, she loses her temper and yells at him that he remember what he did. Later on, she apologizes, but when he steps on a piece of metal that was part of the machine she was trying to fix, Maria immediately snaps again. She is strong willed and the best First Response Aid and Resurgam. She is a quick spirit and she never gives up.

Tomoe Tachibana

This heiress to one of Japan's most powerful ninja clans grew up in the very definition of luxury, but has decided to distance herself from her family in order to live "on her own" (along with her usual retinue of household staff and her personal butler, Hanzou). A strong-willed and thoughtful girl, Tomoe wields her endoscope's controls with the grace and style that her ancestors wielded their blades. She often wears a kimono under her white doctor's coat. Her operations are different than the other doctors.

Steven Hopper of GameZone gave the game a score of 8/10. "Trauma Team is a fine addition to the franchise, offering a changing narrative and some new gameplay features to help it stand out against its predecessors.
