Tigranes III was king of Armenia
from 20 BC
until 8 BC
. He was the son of Artavasdes II and brother of Artaxias II
.
Tacitus (Annales, II 3) says that in 20 BC
, the Armenians sent messengers to Roman Emperor
Augustus
to tell him that they no longer wanted Artaxias II
as their king, and asked that his brother Tigranes III (then in Roman custody in Alexandria
, Egypt
) be installed in his place. Augustus readily agreed, and sent a large army under Tiberius
to depose Artaxias II. Before they arrived, however, Artaxias II was assassinated by some of his other relatives, and the Romans put Tigranes III on the throne unopposed. He was succeeded by his son Tigranes IV
and daughter from a different mother, Erato
