Controversies

In January, 2010, 143 students living in the hostels of the Symbiosis Infotech Campus at Hinjewadi fell ill after eating at the common mess on the campus. The mess contractor, manager and head cook were detained by the police.

On 1 August 2010 the Pune rural police had raided a farm house in Theur where 490 students were partying. A total of 80 students were arrested. All of them were released on bail later. The police maintained that the raid was carried out because of complaints from the villagers about loud music and because no permission was sought to carry out bar activity. A music system and 13,000 litres of alcohol, were seized. Medical tests on 489 youths revealed that 80 had taken alcohol. These 80 students were arrested. Five students were suspended and put on community service for fifteen days. The incident led to discussions in the parliament where the insensitivity with which the police paraded the students before the media was discussed by the Shiv Sena
