Smriti is one of the few people from the entertainment world who have been able to break the myth that actors do not care for people and country but can join politics to bring change for better. Smriti Irani also finds her name mentioned in the autobiography of the former Home Minister and veteran political leader L K Advani My Country My Life.
In the first quarter of the year 2010, Smriti was appointed as the National Secretary of the party and on 24 June 2010, she was appointed as All India President of the Women's Wing of the party i.e. Bhartiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha. After becoming President of the women's' cell, Smriti has raised various issues like women empowerment in Indian Military and has shown a red eye towards crime against women and has urged government to take necessary steps to ensure safety of women specially in New Delhi
.
In August 2011, she was sworn in as a Member of Parliament from Gujarat to the Rajya Sabha
