Saas-Almagell is first mentioned in 1291 as Armenzello. In 1307 it was mentioned as Almenkel.

Geography

Saas-Almagell has an area, , of 110.3 square kilometre. Of this area, 7.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 4.1% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and 87.9% is unproductive land.

The municipality is located in the Visp district and is located approximately 5 km (3.1 mi) from Saas-Fee

It is the starting point for the small independent ski area of Fugglstalden-Heidbodme which is also part of the combined Saasquistal ski region, albeit connected to the other parts of the region by postal boat, rather than dedicated skilifts. As well as downhill skiing and snowboarding pistes, it has uphill skiing and sledging trails. It was the early home of the famous Swiss skier Pirmin Zurbriggen
