Premio Parioli
Encyclopedia
The Premio Parioli, sometimes referred to as the Italian 2,000 Guineas, is a Group 3
flat
horse race
in Italy
which is open to three-year-old thoroughbred
colts
. It is run at Capannelle
, Rome
, over a distance of 1,600 metres (about 1 mile), and it is scheduled to take place each year in April.
The event was established in 1907, and it was originally also open to fillies. The format was based on the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, a leading flat race in England. The last filly to win was Saccaroa in 1950, and the last to be placed was Arranvanna in 1991.
The Premio Parioli held Group 1 status for a period in the early 1990s, but since then it has been downgraded twice. It was relegated to Group 2 level in 1996, and to Group 3 in 2007.
