's National Educational Research Competition,
in December 2008. The competition invited Local Authorities to submit research proposals to develop innovative approaches to support teaching and learning in maths using ICT. Pontnewyndd Primary and Hollybush Primary led the implementation of the research.

When inspected in 2005, 86% of the teaching was found to be of good quality, which is above the national average and an improvement since the previous inspection. The school's grade in a variety of categories was predominantly 2 out of 5, meaning "good features and no important shortcomings". It achieved grade 1 in the following categories:
