Piet Verhaert was a Belgian painter, a member of les XX
and etcher of townscapes, interiors, figures and portraits. Also a notable painter of decorative panels. Trained at the Academy of Antwerp, originally studying sculpting but switched to painting. Travelled to The Netherlands

. Debuted in 1873 at the Triannual Salon van Antwerpen. Stayed for a year in Paris

During his time in Spain (1882-83), he made copies from Velazquez. Member of Les XX
,'The Twenty'. Founder of the Society Aquafortistes and teacher at the Academy of Antwerp from 1886. Painted, predominantly genre scenes from the C17th and C18th. From the beginning of the '80's painted his own designs, working in the open air and later brown became the dominant colour of his work. He is best known for his work of the old street districts of Antwerp. Powerful colourist and a virtuoso with the pencil. Painted a fresco in the City Hall of Antwerp (1899). Made an album of etches, all the 'old corners of Antwerp'. Works can be found in the Museums of Antwerp, Brussels
