In the summer of 2004, Moutinho signed with Falkirk
in Scotland
, initially on a one-year deal. He scored 19 goals overall in his first four seasons at the club, including a memorable goal against Rangers

injury kept him out of the second half of Falkirk's Scottish First Division
championship-winning side in 2004–05.
Moutinho was close to sealing a transfer to Kayserispor
, but the deal was not concluded before the closure of the Turkish
transfer window in early 2008. On 21 May, he eventually left Falkirk and signed a return to his country, as he re-joined Marítimo. On leaving Falkirk, Moutinho remarked "I am going to keep the house I have in Falkirk and hopefully I’ll be back", adding "This is not goodbye but "See you later…" – signalling his intent to return to Falkirk in the future.
Rarely used during his second spell in Madeira
, he finished the season on loan, to fellow top division outfit Rio Ave FC, also not managing to find the net.
In October 2009, Moutinho was released from his contract with Marítimo, rejoining Falkirk. On 8 November he started and scored, during the club's 3–3 home draw against Celtic
and, in January of the following year, his contract was extended until the end of 2009–10

On 18 June 2010, Moutinho left Falkirk, singing with AEP Paphos F.C. from Cyprus
