Education

Astakhov received a bachelor's degree in Law from Moscow's Dzerzhinsky Red Banner KGB Higher School in 1991. He then went on to achieve a PhD in law from the University of Pittsburgh school of law in 2002. His dissertation dealt with the dynamics of solving legal conflicts. In 2006, he defended an LL.D. with a dissertation on "Legal conflicts and forms of their resolution". He speaks Russian, Swedish, Spanish, French and English.

Lawyer

Pavel has practiced law since 1991; from 1994, he has been a member of the Moscow Lawyers Bar. In 1994, he created his own law firm, which was reorganized into the "Pavel Astakhov Lawyers Board" in 2003. In 2001, he received a medal as an "Honorable Lawyer of Russia" and in 2004 he received an award "For Loyalty to the Lawyer's Duty" and received the highest award for lawyer's, called "Femida". He was named a "Russian of the Year" in 2007. He is also a member of the Paris Lawyer Association, the expert advisory council for the chairman of the Audit Chamber of Russia, the European Arbitration and Mediation Court, the board of mediators of the Commercial and Industrial Chamber of Russia, the Social Council of the Federal Agency of Safety (FSB OS), and the arbitration court at the Russian Union of Industrialists and Businessmen.

First book was published in 2000 - "Pravopisnye istiny ili levosudie dlja vseh", which is an ironic view of Russian reality and legal system through cases and humorous anecdotes.
In 2007 the book Raider was published, where Astakhov in the form of the novel tells about the legal aspects of unfriendly M&A in post-soviet Russia. The series now include four more books. For these novels Astakhov is often referred to as a Russian John Grisham

Children's Rights Commissioner for the President of the Russian Federation

After twelve children had cut their veins in an orphanage-boarding school in Izhevsk, Astakhov intervened to supervise the investigation, resisting obstruction by the municipal authorities and seeking to ensure that those responsible were punished by the law.

", personally carrying out negotiations with the Finnish services of guardianship and helping to find a compromise, thus creating a precedent facilitating similar disputes for mixed Finnish-Russian families.
In the incident with Artemom Savelyev (Justin Henson) Astakhov took a firm position which has compelled the American side to agree on negotiations with the conclusion in the form of signing of the bilateral Russian-American treaty on adoption.
He secured the creation of the Russian-French Advisory Commission on family affairs, which aims to help resolve conflicts in mixed families, on adoption, and with working out the bilateral contract on adoption between France and the Russian Federation.
