Duarte then played two seasons apiece for S.C. Salgueiros and C.S. Marítimo, amassing more 84 top level matches, after which he returned to Leiria, where he retired after almost one decade (aged 34), and as first-choice in four of those seasons (in 2001–02, as the club qualified for the Intertoto Cup, he was managed by young José Mourinho
).
In early 2008, Duarte left Leiria to take charge of Burkina Faso
. On 2 June of the following year, however, he was signed by France
's Le Mans Union Club 72, on a two-year contract, while still working with the national team.
On 8 December 2009, Duarte was fired by Le Mans, becoming the first Ligue 1

Coaching career
After his retirement, Duarte immediately began his coaching career, staying with his last club Leiria as assistant.
