The municipality was part of the Oron District until it was dissolved on 31 August 2006, and Oron-le-Châtel became part of the new district of Lavaux-Oron.
The municipality is located on the right bank of the Broye.

Geography
Oron-le-Châtel has an area, , of 1.3 square kilometre. Of this area, 0.68 square kilometre or 54.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.38 square kilometre or 30.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.18 square kilometre or 14.3% is settled (buildings or roads) and 0.01 km² (2.5 acre) or 0.8% is unproductive land.Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 9.5% and transportation infrastructure made up 4.8%. Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 35.7% is used for growing crops and 17.5% is pastures.
The municipality was part of the Oron District until it was dissolved on 31 August 2006, and Oron-le-Châtel became part of the new district of Lavaux-Oron.
The municipality is located on the right bank of the Broye.
