 rock was discovered and mined. A brick-kiln was built to process the ore. Previously, the population was living from agriculture, and due to limited land, many emigrated. At the beginning of the 21st Century, most workers worked in the valley.

Geography

Novaggio has an area, , of 4.31 square kilometres (1.7 sq mi). Of this area, 0.53 km² (0.204634144054044 sq mi) or 12.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while 3.37 km² (1.3 sq mi) or 78.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.36 km² (0.138996777093313 sq mi) or 8.4% is settled (buildings or roads) and 0.1 km² (24.7 acre) or 2.3% is unproductive land.

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 6.5% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.4%. Out of the forested land, 71.5% of the total land area is heavily forested and 5.3% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 5.6% is used for growing crops and 6.5% is used for alpine pastures. Of the unproductive areas, 2.3% is unproductive vegetation and .

The municipality is located in the Lugano district, in the mid-Malcantone valley.
