Nova Prata is a city in Rio Grande do Sul
, south Brazil
, situated in the state's mountainous Serra Gaúcha
region. It is situated at 28°47′2"S 51°36′36"W, at an altitude of 662 meters. Its population estimate in 2004 was of 20,021 inhabitants. It occupies an area of 259.15 km².

Situated in the Colonial Microregion of the High Taquari, located in northeast, distant Superior Encosta 186 km of the capital of Porto Alegre, in an altitude of 820m, conserve its more authentic characteristics: the colonial properties, linguajar and the inherited customs of Italian immigration mainly; Pole, German, Portuguese and others in lesser number.
City Headquarters is Alfredo Keys (today Veranópolis).

Nova Prata is bound by: Guabijú and Andres of Rocha on the north, Vila Flores and Fagundes Varela on the south, Nova Bassano, Nova Araçá and Vista Alegre do Prata on the west, and Protásio Alves on the east.
With a population estimate of 22,257 (IBGE/2007) inhabitants, since early the agricultural activity if it united with the vegetal extrativismo, consubstanciado in the exploration of ervais and wood, this last one approximately became it main activity of the region until the decade of 60. Today, its strong dissecado structural relief, the great basalt deposits of the formation of the General Mountain range characterizes this area.
