Mugello is a landscape north of Florence
in northern Italy
. It is separated by the Santerno
river valley by the Futa Pass
.
The area was settled by a Ligurian tribe known as the Magelli, whence the name. Then the region was occupied by the Etruscans
who have left many archeological traces and who built the first road network of Mugello. The subsequent Roman
conquest and colonization dates back to the 4th century BC and it is not only testified not by several finds such as tombs, coins, walls but also by the toponomastic, e.g. names of places ending with the praedial suffix -ano (Latin -anus) or -ana: Cerliano, Figliano, Marcoiano, Galliano, Lucignano, etc. In the Middle Ages it was home to numerous castles, and was later acquired by the Republic of Florence
. Several families of the city built patrician villas there, like those of the Medici in Cafaggiolo and the Trebbio. A more recent event was the creation of an artificial Lake of Bilancino on the Sieve river.
The area gives its name to the Mugello Circuit
