This does two things: it flattens the tape to allow a smoother shot, and it also makes the blade of the stick stickier which helps hockey players control the puck for stick-handling, passing, and shooting purposes. Also the wax is used to wick away water that collects on the blade during ice hockey sessions. In addition, some goaltenders rub the wax on the shaft of the stick to help them hold the stick when it is struck by hard shots, some of which exceed of 100 MPH.
