The Pentium III
from Intel is a sixth-generation CPU
targeted at the consumer market.
Pentium III
The Pentium III brand refers to Intel's 32-bit x86 desktop and mobile microprocessors based on the sixth-generation P6 microarchitecture introduced on February 26, 1999. The brand's initial processors were very similar to the earlier Pentium II-branded microprocessors...

Central processing unit
The central processing unit is the portion of a computer system that carries out the instructions of a computer program, to perform the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations of the system. The CPU plays a role somewhat analogous to the brain in the computer. The term has been in...

"Katmai" (250 nm)
- All models support: MMX, SSEStreaming SIMD ExtensionsIn computing, Streaming SIMD Extensions is a SIMD instruction set extension to the x86 architecture, designed by Intel and introduced in 1999 in their Pentium III series processors as a reply to AMD's 3DNow! . SSE contains 70 new instructions, most of which work on single precision floating point...
- The 'B' suffix denotes a 133 MHz FSB
- The L2 cache is off-die and runs at 50% CPU speed.

- The 'B' suffix denotes a 133 MHz FSB
- The 'E' suffix denotes the transition from Katmai's 250nm process to the 180nm process, but only on those models that overlap between Katmai and Coppermine families.
- The L2 cache runs at 100% cpu speed

"Coppermine-128" (180 nm)
A modified version of Coppermine was developed for Microsoft's Xbox game console. The only significant change was that the chip lost half of its L2 cache, dropping it down to 128 KB. Unlike the Celeron Coppermine variant with the same size L2 cache, Xbox's Coppermine core kept all of its 8-way L2 cache associativity from the Pentium III. This meant that the Xbox CPU's L2 cache was more efficient than Celeron's. The Xbox CPU was manufactured onto the same Micro-PGA2 packaging as notebook chips.- All models support: MMX, SSEStreaming SIMD ExtensionsIn computing, Streaming SIMD Extensions is a SIMD instruction set extension to the x86 architecture, designed by Intel and introduced in 1999 in their Pentium III series processors as a reply to AMD's 3DNow! .
