 and serves 22 stations. The central part of the line basically consists of the original Tianjin Metro line, put into service in 1984. However, the line was considerably extended and modernized in 2005. The line color is red.

History

Construction started on July 4, 1970. While the first section with 4 stations on 3.6 km was completed by February 1976, after the 1976 Tangshan earthquake

 the works were paused until 1979. Another 1.6 km with the two stations Xi Nan Jiao and Er Wei Lu could be finished by 1980. On December 28, 1984, the 7.4 km long metro line with 8 stations between Xi Zhan (Tianjin West Railway Station) and Xin Hua Lu (Xin Hua road) was put into service.

From October 9, 2001 on, the metro service was suspended for almost five years to allow for a complete reconstruction and modernization of the line. The original line ran only 2 to 3 metres under the city's streets, partly using a dried out canal

 bed. Also, the line had been constructed mostly by volunteers from factories, schools and other institutions around the city. Besides upgrading the original line, the line was considerably extended and further 13 stations were built. On December 28, 2005, construction works were completed, so after a test phase, the service could be resumed on June 12, 2006.

In 2008, the reconstruction of the Tianjin West Railway Station required Xi Zhan metro station to be temporarily closed, cutting the only direct link of the Tianjin Metro with national railway services.
