Beichen District was originally a suburban district of Tianjin

 city. Before June 1992, the district was named Beijiao District (北郊区) which means North Suburb. As the city expanded, it was generally regarded as a new metropolitan area. Hence the change of name.

The district occupies approximately 478.5 km², with a population of 320,000. China National Highway 103
