The Company selected Mooresville for production as it is the home city for many NASCAR teams and has an exceptional labor pool for the work Li-ion Motors does. As many motors are being pulled out of cars as are being put in here. For cars such as the Crossfire and PT Cruiser, the motor and other systems are stripped out and sold back to the automaker or others. By building off existing models, Li-ion Motors can focus on the critical part of any electric car — the battery system.

This vehicle was equipped with advanced technologies onboard rapid charger system, was selected due to its zero-emissions, high-speed capacity, charge time, and overall functionality for the EPA’s Near-Road Air Quality Study. The vehicle was used by EPA’s Office of Research & Development (ORD) to study the air pollutant concentrations along with major roadways that was of a great concern to the health of people working at nearby places. The vehicle was fitted with air quality measurement instruments to check the pollution as it gives the ability to evaluate the major factors impacting near- road air quality, such as traffic levels, meteorological conditions, and surrounding topography. Li-ion Motors PT is one of the world’s only production model high-speed electric vehicles and was originally developed as a part of SPACE ACT Agreement with NASA.

In October 2007, Li-ion Motors smart car was the "Once in a Life Time" package offered to Sam's Club

In April 2008, Li-ion Motors entered into a license agreement with Superlattice Power providing for their license to SPI of their patent applications and technologies for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and other applications.
Under the license agreement, Li-ion Motors has the right to purchase lithium-ion batteries from SPI, and lithium-ion batteries shall be supplied in preference to, and on a priority basis, before other customers of SPI. Li-ion Motors cost for lithium-ion batteries purchased from SPI shall be SPI’s actual manufacturing costs for such batteries.

Li-ion Motors planned in December 2009 to start a new manufacturing unit in Rutherford County, NC. For this manufacturing unit Li-ion Motors anticipated receiving $13 million in concessions and credits that would included a 145000 square feet (13,470.9 m²) manufacturing facility, with an option of a 400000 square feet (37,161.2 m²) manufacturing facility for future expansion. Li-ion Motors entered into a licensed agreement a Canadian corporation, whereby the Canadian corporation may market and manufacture Li-ion Motors vehicles independently and will pay a total valued at $1 million CDN upon completion of a valuation. The Canadian corporation will also pay a research and development fee of $500,000 to Li-ion Motors.

Li-ion Motors Corp has a belief that the automobile is about to start morphing into the cars and trucks of the future. Not only will the fuel or energy source be changing as well as the drive train and there will be a total change in the actual structure and component materials that make up the vehicle itself.

The company is responsible for transforming the already efficient MINI into a zero-emissions electric vehicle. Li-ion Motors engineers remove the internal combustion engines from cars such as the Chrysler Crossfire, PT Cruiser, Smart for-two, and the MINI, and replace them with electric motors.

Rewards

Li-ion Motors entered the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, a $10 million competition to inspire a new generation of viable, super efficient vehicles. Li-ion Motors entry, the Wave II, passed the initial Shakedown review with a perfect scorecard and is one of the remaining 40 teams that will be competing at the Michigan International Speedway. The Wave II then passed the Knockout efficiency tests in June with the highest posted efficiency in the entire contest (182.3 MPGe). One of only 15 remaining competitors, at the Finals in July it also posted the highest efficiency in its class (171.4 MPGe). Li-ion Motors PT cruiser was awarded a contract by ARCADIS, a Contractor to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). LMCO’s electric vehicle was selected due to its zero-emissions, high-speed capacity, charge time, and overall functionality for the EPA’s Near-Road Air Quality Study to evaluate air pollutant concentrations along side major roadways, which may be a health concern to people living and working nearby.

Li-ion Motors vehicles and their relationship with NASA was featured to international audience via award winning History Channel series Modern Marvels on May 16, 2007.
