History

The institute was established in 1948 with a donation of Rs. 25 lacs and 31.2 hectares of land by the textile magnate Sheth Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai, hence the college was named Lalbhai Dalpatbhai College of Engineering. The institute started with 75 students in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical undergraduate programs, and was affiliated to Bombay University. In June 1955, admission seats were increased to 150, which were further increased to 300 in 1957. From June 1963, Degree and Diploma granting institutions were separated administratively. A postgraduate program in Electrical Engineering was introduced in 1954. A postgraduate course in Mechanical Engineering was started from June 1963 in the area of Refrigeration and Air-conditioning. A postgraduate course in Civil Engineering was introduced in June 1970 in Soil Engineering, Structural Engineering and in Public Health Engineering in June 1972.

Masters Programs in Computer Aided Structural Analysis and Design and Water Resources Management were introduced in 1986.

The institute has six hostel blocks to provide accommodation for 750 students. There are four mess in the hostel campus which are managed by students themselves.

The campus has offices, hostels, and residences of the Principal, rector and wardens. The plinth area of college and hostel buildings admeasures 45,220 sq.m. and 12,556 sq.m. respectively. The coordinates are 23°02′06.12"N 72°32′46.99"E

Workshop

The workshop is equipped to show students the basic operations of manufacturing and production. It is equipped with a CNC machine, an electro-discharge machine, and measuring instruments. The institute has a thermal workshop in which boilers and other thermal equipments can be studied, and an automobile workshop.

Library

The library has 1,03,000 technical books, 173 periodicals, reference books, handbooks, encyclopedias and Indian standards. The library has book bank facility for students. An extra reading facility from early morning to evening is arranged during preparation time for examination. Library has its own xerox machine and provides photocopy services to the students and staff members at nominal rates. Free internet access is available.

Computing facility

Each department has its own computer center, with Sun work stations with Solaris and Dec Alpha. Large numbers of personal computers are in use. There is a 256 kbit/s leased line for internet networking, and all computer centers of all departments are connected with internet facility.

Training and placement cell

The institute maintains a training and placement cell to help students prepare for job searches. Assistance is given to students in developing interviewing skills. Major industries conduct campus interviews for final year students, and thus some students get their job offers through the cell.

Faculty members also maintain networks with alumni and potential employers. Entrepreneurship awareness camps are organized at the institute to prepare the students for stating their own industry. Lectures are arranged for students to have first hand information for further studies in India and abroad. National companies comes to select students.

Hostel

The institute has hostel facilities for 787 students. There are four messes in the hostel campus, which are managed by the students. Newspapers and magazines are subscribed for the hostel library. Entertainment facilities include TV room, badminton room, and gymnasium, and outdoor and indoor games. The university health center has extended its services to the students of the hostel.

The hostel is administered by the rector and four wardens.

Canteen

The canteen is located at the center of the campus. Students staying in hostels on campus have dining halls.

NCC activity

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is a major youth organization in the country. It is a link between defence and education. The objective of the NCC is to make citizens who show discipline, ideals, services, dignity of labour and hardwork, and a spirit of adventure.

01 Gujarat Composite Technical Company is an NCC unit situated on campus. Technical training for engineering students are given in Engineers, EME and Signal Platoon. NCC training is given to the cadets for three years. After completion of three years training and 2nd and 3rd year examination cadets will be awarded the "C" certificate.

Cadets with the "C" certificate have opportunities to travel abroad, and easier entry to the Armed Forces and Para Military Forces.

Post office and bank

A post office is situated on campus, and a bank is situated near by university library.

Extracurricular

Students participate in activities such as sports, indoor games, cultural activities, debating, social services, social gatherings, and voluntary blood donation camp. Indoor sports activity is in room 20, which includes a four-station multi-gym, and table tennis tables.

Student stores

To sell stationery, calculators, boiler suits, tools and instruments at reasonable rates, a students stores is run on the campus.

Industrial liaison

The institute is in constant liaison with major industries through expert lectures, testing consultancy projects, investigations, students training counting education programs, and seminars.

Placement Cell

The college has launched a placement cell http://www.ldceplacement.co.in http://www.ldceplacement.co.in to help provide jobs for students.

From 2009, starting from batch 2010, the placement activities are carried out online.
