The British Champions Long Distance Cup, formerly known as the Jockey Club Cup, is a Group 3

which is open to thoroughbred
s aged three years or older. It is run at Ascot
over a distance of 2 miles (3,219 metres). It is scheduled to take place each year in October.
The event was established at Newmarket
in 1873, and it was originally contested over 2¼ miles. It was cut to 1½ miles in 1959, and then extended to its present length, 2 miles, in 1963. It was given Group 3 status in 1971, and it is now the last long-distance Group race of the British flat racing season.
There have been a number of repeat winners
of the Jockey Club Cup, and the most successful is Further Flight, who recorded his fifth victory in 1995. He is the only horse to have won the same Group race in Britain so many times.
The Jockey Club Cup used to be held during Newmarket's Cambridgeshire Meeting in late September or early October. Between 2000 and 2010 it was staged on Newmarket's Champions' Day in mid October. In 2011 it was transferred to the new Champions' Day at Ascot and renamed the British Champions Long Distance Cup.
