When Joan was six years of age, her mother, Bonne died of Bubonic plague
. Joan and her siblings later gained a stepmother in Joan I, Countess of Auvergne. Joan I had three children with John II, however they all died young.

Joan instead was married on 12 February 1352 to Charles the Bad
