. He is currently the Cabinet Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas of India. He was the Cabinet Minister of Urban development of India, who headed the group of ministers(GoM), appointed by the PM Dr.Manmohan Singh to supervise XIX Commonwealth Games(CWG) in Delhi.

A famous news paper Daily Pioneer stated "The resignation of Suresh Kalmadi as the Congress Parliamentary Party secretary is being seen as a mere eyewash since no action has been taken against political bigwigs like Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy and Sports Minister MS Gill, who also face charges in the Commonwealth Games scam"
