The station is popular with commuters travelling to Edinburgh from Fife and beyond, thanks to its location beside the M90 motorway
. It is a popular place as it is the last stop before the Fife Circle Line splits in two, so trains pass through this station more frequently than any other in Fife. Two large free of charge park and ride
car parks are provided. However the popularity of the station now means that the two car parks are filled to over flowing throughout each working day. Many cars are parked illegally and in surrounding streets.
The station is currently staffed for all trains and has public toilets, and a ticket hall. There is also a waiting room and a footbridge.

Mondays to Saturdays daytimes four Fife Circle Line trains per hour go southbound to Edinburgh. Northbound, services run every half hour to , and half hourly to . Evenings and Sundays two trains per hour go southbound to Edinburgh and two per hour go along the Fife Circle one in each direction (one via Dunfermline and one via Kirkcaldy).
Monday to Saturday - nearly all First ScotRail services to Aberdeen and Inverness no longer stop at Inverkeithing. Trains destined for Perth, Dundee, Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath are the ones generally calling at Inverkeithing from Edinburgh. There is a once daily train to Glasgow Queen Street each morning, returning in the evening peak. Ticket barrier checks apply during morning peak periods on southbound trains, and at other adhoc times.
Seven long distance trains in each direction operate Mon- Sat (less on Sundays) from Inverkeithing. East Coast trains generally heading for London King's Cross via Edinburgh, Newcastle and York. Arriva Crosscountry generally heading for Devon and Cornwall via Edinburgh, Newcastle, York, Leeds, Sheffield, Derby and stations via Birmingham/Bristol.
