Founded as a merger of the hard drive businesses of IBM and Hitachi , Hitachi GST provided storage for a broad range of market segments, including Enterprise, Desktop, Mobile Computing, Consumer Electronics and Personal Storage.
In March 2011, Western Digital announced it would acquire the global storage unit of Hitachi, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, for $4.3 billion. In 2003, Hitachi had paid IBM $2.05 billion for its HDD business.
