, England. He was the eldest son of Rev. Samuel Herrick Macaulay, who was a rector in Hodnet. Their family descended, in the male-line, from the Macaulay family of Lewis. In 1878, George Campbell Macaulay married Grace Mary Conybeare, who was the daughter of Rev. W. J. Conybeare. Together the couple had two sons, and four daughters. One of their daughters, their second child, was Rose Macaulay

. From 1901 to 1907, he was Professor of English Language and Literature at University College of Wales, at Aberystwyth. In 1905, he lectured English at Cambridge.
