He married his wife, Diana Darnall Beer before leaving Berkeley in 1965. His family includes two sons (Omar and Jeremy), a daughter (Marie), two daughters in law (Caroline and Jessica), and three grandsons (Augustus Charles, Solomon Jackson, and Arlo Fletcher).
