The Company was founded in 1972 as the manager of the Foreign & Colonial Investment Trust

In 1985 the Company started managing third party funds. In 1989 the Company established a partnership with Germany

Ownership of F&C is well diversified, with approximately 100,000 shareholders. The largest single share holder is Eureko N.V., a Netherlands based insurance group which is a 10% shareholder and has a representative on the Board.
