Son of Clorindo Alvear y Zurita and Teodorinda Urrutia y Pérez
He was ordained in 1941 and began his pastoral work in the Minor Seminary of Santiago. He was appointed in 1963 Auxiliary Bishop
of Talca
and Titular Bishop
of Columnata. In 1965 he was appointed Bishop of San Felipe
post he resigned in 1974 when he became Auxiliary Bishop
of Santiago de Chile and Titular Bishop
of Sita.
He died in 1982. He was buried in the Sanctuary
of Our Lady of Lourdes
in Quinta Normal
until April 13, 2008, where his corpse was translated to the church of St. Louis Bertrand
