The network launched with 250 hours of eco-related programming and parent Discovery Communications invested US$50 million on the creation of the network as well as advertising dollars to run the network.

Planet Green, as of fall 2011, currently showcases documentary programming, having abandoned its previous focus on environmental programs.

Relaunch

Discovery Channel set plans to start a 24-hour channel in the second half of 2008 focused on eco-friendly living, as part of a push into the rising environmental movement with shows like "Ten Ways To Save the Planet".
Discovery Home was retired and its satellite carriage replaced by a Discovery-owned environmentally themed channel named "Planet Green" at 6:00 pm on June 4, 2008. The channel focuses on environmental issues and ecological living. Discovery is investing $50 million in original programming for the rebranded channel with shows such as a weekly eco-newscast series with Bob Woodruff of ABC News
