In the wake of reduced demand for Classical recordings from the late-1990s onward, the orchestra's recording activity was reduced. A project to record Wagner's complete Ring cycle, under Dohnányi, was not completed.

Despite this setback, the orchestra has continued to make a limited number of recordings in the 21st Century. In 2007, the orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst
