Cleveland Orchestra Discography
Encyclopedia
The Cleveland Orchestra, which was founded in 1918, was first recorded in 1924. Most of the orchestra's recordings have been made either in its concert home, Severance Hall
, or in nearby Masonic Auditorium.
.
Under Artur Rodziński
, the orchestra was signed to the Columbia Masterworks label. This association continued under successors Erich Leinsdorf
, George Szell
, and Lorin Maazel
. Some of the orchestra's recordings with Szell were initially released by Columbia's budget sub-label, Epic.
With the advent of the digital recording process, the orchestra began collaborating with the locally-based audiophile label, Telarc. This association, as well as one with Decca
, began under Maazel and continued under his successor, Christoph von Dohnányi
.
The orchestra has also been recorded under several guest conductors, including Pierre Boulez
, who was musical advisor to the orchestra from 1970–1972, and Vladimir Ashkenazy
.
In the wake of reduced demand for Classical recordings from the late-1990s onward, the orchestra's recording activity was reduced. A project to record Wagner's complete Ring cycle, under Dohnányi, was not completed.
Despite this setback, the orchestra has continued to make a limited number of recordings in the 21st Century. In 2007, the orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst
recorded Beethoven's Ninth Symphony for Deutsche Grammophon. In addition, pianist Mitsuko Uchida is undertaking a series of Mozart Piano Concertos for the Decca label.
