The Chappell-Hadlee Trophy in cricket
Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players on an oval-shaped field, at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard long pitch. One team bats, trying to score as many runs as possible while the other team bowls and fields, trying to dismiss the batsmen and thus limit the...

), of New Zealand.

The trophy is currently held by Australia after a 3–2 win over New Zealand in the 2009–10 edition of the tournament. Australia have held the trophy after the last three series, having also won in 2007–08, drawn in 2008–09. Australia has won the trophy on the most occasions: three series wins to New Zealand's one.

Trophy history

Over the four years the trophy has been run, the games have broken quite a few records, especially during the 2006-07 series.

The third ODI in 2005-06 at Jade Stadium, Christchurch, which was won by New Zealand, was the highest ever successful run chase by any country (332). However, this record was soon completely eclipsed by South Africa, also against Australia, scoring 438 in the second innings.

The first ODI in 2006-07 at Westpac Stadium, Wellington, was the first time Australia had ever been beaten by 10 wickets, in 646 ODI matches. It was also only the second time New Zealand had won by 10 wickets, the first in a full 50-over game.

The second ODI in 2006-07 at Eden Park, Auckland, broke a number of records. Australia's batting first total of 336 was a record total for Eden Park, and a record ODI total in New Zealand. The subsequent successful chase was a record chase for New Zealand (beating the record set the year before), and was second for successful chases in the world, only behind the South Africa chase of 2006. The loss also saw Australia lose the top spot in ODI rankings, also a first since the standings began.

The third ODI in 2006-07 at Seddon Park, Hamilton, was an even higher total set by Australia, 346. This obviously broke the record set two days before of the highest ODI total in New Zealand. New Zealand again successfully chased this, breaking that record again. Matthew Hayden's first innings total of 181 not out for Australia was the highest individual innings for an Australian batsman. Craig McMillan's century in the second innings was the fastest ever ODI century by a New Zealand batsman, beating the record Jacob Oram set earlier in the year.

It is also interesting that the four highest run chases in the world have all been conceded by Australia, with three of them in the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy. The order is:
  1. 438 South Africa v Australia
  2. 350 New Zealand v Australia
  3. 340 New Zealand v Australia
  4. 332 New Zealand v Australia
