The municipality was part of the Payerne District until it was dissolved on 31 August 2006, and Champtauroz became part of the new district of Broye-Vully.
The municipality is located along the Lucens-Yvonand street. It consists of the village of Champtauroz and the hamlet
of Le Pontet.

Champtauroz has an area, , of 3.05 square kilometres (1.2 sq mi). Of this area, 2.28 km² (0.88031292159098 sq mi) or 74.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.59 km² (0.227800273569596 sq mi) or 19.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.15 km² (37.1 acre) or 4.9% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.01 km² (2.5 acre) or 0.3% is either rivers or lakes. Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 2.0% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.3%. Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests.
