. As the word "Wissenschaft", in German includes both the natural sciences and the humanities, the academy's title is best translated as Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The Academy building is located in central Berlin.

The academy was constituted in 1993, and is the last in a series of earlier Berlin academies, including the Prussian Academy of Sciences

Awards

The Academy bestows a number of scientific awards, among them the following two medals:

• The Helmholtz Medal is awarded no more than once every two years to an individual that has made signal contributions to the humanities, the social sciences, the natural sciences, or to medicine
• The Leibniz Medal is awarded to individuals or groups for signal services to science
