El-Shawan first studied economics in Egypt, then studied composition with Aram Khachaturian
at the Moscow Conservatory
in the late 1950s and in 1967-68. His pupils included the Jordanian composer Haytham Sukareya and the Egyptian composers George Kyrillos and Ramz Sabry Samy.
His daughter, Dr. Salwa El-Shawan Castelo-Branco, is an ethnomusicologist
and teaches at the New University of Lisbon
