AUSU was formed in 1993 as a registered Alberta society until students' unions in Alberta were granted recognition under the Post-Secondary Learning Act. On 13 September 2004 the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
approved an Order in Council, originally incorporating AUSU as "The Students' Association of Athabasca University," for the purpose of providing student affairs and promoting the welfare of students.
The mission of the AUSU is to promote leadership, advocacy, a learning organization, responsibility, responsiveness and stewardship in the Athabasca University student committee.

AUSU has established several clubs for students.
