The Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club (Ateneo Glee Club, or ACGC) has proudly distinguished itself as the first university
chorale in the Philippines, celebrating its 90th year in 2011. It has held concerts internationally, and has released several albums with songs genres ranging from Classical

. Jose Mossesgeld Santiago, a 1911 graduate of the Ateneo who became the first Filipino to sing at La Scala de Milan
, was appointed conductor. At that time, the consummate musician was already conducting the Ateneo Boy's Choir, probably the first Filipino children's choir to make waves in the Philippines, and the Ateneo Orchestra. Mosessgeld concluded his 5-year-stint by directing his three groups of wards in the premier production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado
in the country.
In 1932, a fire broke out in Intramuros. In a flash the Ateneo buildings were ablaze. But in Padre Faura where the fleeing Ateneans took refuge while their school was being razed to the ground, an undaunted Jesuit, Fr. Theodore Diagler, continued rehearsing the singers for their participation in Treasure Island, the play that was staged within four weeks of the devastating disaster.
Then 9 years later, World War II
came. The young voices faded away and people said they must have died a natural death.

It was in 1953 that the indefatigable James B. Reuter, S.J.
brought about the resurgence of the Glee Club in Loyola Heights following a 3-year hiatus. The dramatist-teacher-glee club director-basketball coach spearheaded sorties in Luzon and Bacolod, and spawned the first combos and bands in the country.
He was succeeded by Prof. Vicente Sales, under whose hand the singers won 2 First prizes and a Second in the National Songfest.
1965 saw the beginning of the era of Fr. Antonio Cuna S.J. The amiable guidance counsellor possessing the rare power of building instant rapport with the students led the Glee Club in the first attempt of any school organization in the Philippines to tour the entire archipelago. Years after, the group provided the choral background of the Tagalog musical Walang Sugat when it was premièred in Manila.
A few notable musicians took turns in filling the void left by Fr. Cuna. Among them were Prof. Alfredo Buenaventura, the faithful arranger of a host of pieces in the repertoire then, Fr. Ruben Tanseco, S.J. who shared the baton with the latter during the Golden Anniversary Concert and Prof. Ramon Santos.
Then in 1974, when the university turned co-educational, Noel Velasco, a member of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, took charge of the first mixed choir and garnered 3 First prizes and a Second in the competitions in Metro Manila
as well as in Himig, a national tilt.
The ACGC peaked in 1979 when Joel Navarro, a recipient of an award from the Metro Manila Popular Music Festival
for his composition "Swerte Swerte Lang", arrived at the scene. A string of performances of the choir including the innovative Concert in Your Homes, TV and 5-star hotel shows and the 1980 National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) where they bagged the First Prize in the College Division, followed. When the second International Choral Festival was held in the Cultural Center of the Philippines
the year after, the Glee Club was top-rated among the Philippine choirs that participated for "opening the gates of heaven with their moving rendition of Thompson's Alleluia" as a critic wrote.
Spurred on by their triumphs , they embarked on their first world tour and immediately earned international acclaim in Barcelona
and other European cities even as they became the first Filipino group to sing at St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York
.
In 1983, they made their first foray into international competitions in Arezzo, Italy copping the top prize in the folkloric division and fifth in polyphonic division. At the same time, they acquired the distinction of being the first non-Italian choir to sing at the General Assembly of the Pope in Rome and the first Asian group to perform at the famous Cologne Cathedral
.
In 1989, they went on a brief European tour and were cited Best Choir in the international festivals in Loreto, Italy and Nancy, France. A year later, Navarro took a 3-year leave due to pressure of work from the University of the Philippines
(UP), and the Asian Institute of Liturgy and Music (AILM). Eudenice Palaruan, Navarro's friend and replacement as conductor, began North American and Guam concert tours, a national tour, and a concert with Lea Salonga
in Manila.
Navarro's determination to eschew the lure of European tilts and steer his group toward a niche in the recording arena paid off in 1996 when the GC snared a couple of Katha awards: for Best rendition of a Traditional song "Lagi kitang Naaalala" and for Best Traditional Music Album for "Lahi". It was a first for any university-based chorale, and more importantly, Lahi became the first and by far the only classical, choral or traditional recording to be nominated Album of the Year competing against the country's mainstream commercial recordings. Then, he led them in successful concert tours in Guam
and North America
(1997), in a national tour (1998), and in Guam again(1999).

The following year, the Glee Club embarked on a new paradigm in choral singing after Ramon Acoymo, alumnus of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, accomplished tenor soloist, and vocal pedagogue, took over as Musical Director. He led the new batch of the Glee Club and honed the raw but promising skills of the Katipunan-based singers. He culminated his term by commissioning new compositions of Marian songs set into choral idiom.
