, Rachel and Mala Junta who would finish singing that year's song. Later, Vodanovic introduced Don Francisco who made his traditional speech of encouragement, and as a novelty, projected on a giant screen, all the best moments of the telethons produced up to that time. Finally, the entertainers of the first section were introduced to the authorities present in the theatre audience.

Pedro Fernández, Lucero, and Myriam Hernández among others performed their acts. The highpoint and most emotional moment came when Millaray Viera, daughter of the deceased Uruguayan singer, Gervasio, performed a tribute to her father and to all those who had died and supported the crusade during the 22 years it had been running.

Then, at midnight, a group of sportspeople led by Eliseo Salazar performed an original musical number in which were people from the sporting media such as, Mario Mauriziano, Gert Weil, Carlos Cazsely, Rocío Ravest and Fernando González. Later, the second section began with an act of cumbia

In the early hours of the morning it was the turn of the comedy section prepared for the occasion with Checho Hirane, Cristian García-Huidobro as star entertainers. Memo Bunke, Millennium Show, Dinamita Show, Melón and Malame, Dino Gordillo and Daniel Alcaíno as Peter Veneno were in charge of making the public laugh. Then, the awaited "Vedetón arrived, presented by Leo Caprile and with the participation of Marcos 'Charola' Pizarro, where the cabaret stars arrived dressed as prisioners, they were Beatriz Alegret, Tatiana Merino, Marcia Saenz and Anoika Wade and those responsible for freeing them were members of the popular and controversial theatre group 'Los Sin Vergüenzas'.

At dawn it was the turn of the female section presented by Kike Morandé and the new comedy revelation of that time, Charly Badulaque a character of Claudio Reyes. Some of the other participants were Nicolas Massú, Jorge Zabaleta, Pedro Lladser and Fernando González, who finally finished as the section winner.

In the morning there was a great drop-off in donations which was sadly followed by an electrical failure which affected the whole theatre, Mario Kreutzberger asked Chilectra about the possibility of a generator. Following this it was the turn of a segment of La Nueva Ola

with the presenter from Radio Pudahuel, Pablo Aguilera. Later was the children's section which on this occasion was broadcast from the Central Court of the Chile National Stadium.

In the afternoon the tasks of Disfruta, Lider and Santa Isabel became a reality. Sadly the reduction of donations was becoming worrying and this is when an improvised appearance on the stage of the Venezuelan artist José Luis Rodríguez, 'El Puma', making a passionate speech to the chileans to get up and take part, following this he sang "El Pavo Real". After that the people filled the coffers.

The final minutes were coming closer and before going to the newscasts from the separate television channels, Lider announced that they had collected in total $ 250,387,198. After that the latest total was read out in the theatre, it was $ 3,524,679,023.

At 22.00 hrs. of Saturday, 2 December the final section began in the Chile National Stadium with the winner of "Nace una Estrella"(Eng:A Star is Born) singing the Ode To Joy

. Artists such as Alberto Plaza, Lucero, Pedro Fernández, Fulanito, Gondwana, Douglas, Azul Azul and Elvis Crespo went up onto the stage.

Finally the latest total was given, $ 6,450,614,205.Don Francisco gave thanks to all those who had taken part in this solidarity campaign, and finally entertainers and artists boarded the Tren de la Felicidad (Eng:The Happiness Train) for an Olympic circuit, thus giving this phrase to the campaign. In addition, over the scoreboard, written in fireworks was the phrase "Gracias Chile" (Eng:Thank you Chile), as had happened in 1995, 1996, and 1998.

Telethon The Magic Number

The Telethon company, out of curiosity, put on a contest, despite the few sponsors involved in that edition of the campaign. It was called "El Numero Magico"(Eng:The Magic Number), which consisted of a lottery. To qualify for the draw, you had to show a preference for products and services available on that Telethon. The prize was a total of $ 1,000,000 in products associated with the 16th solidarity campaign.

The winning number selected would come out in the news broadcast at that time on television channels (Teletrece

Supportive tasks

Although several editions of this event had ventured into this area, Telethon 2000 was notable for the originality of other undertakings that were performed during the Telethon to help large companies collect significant donations.
  • Lomitón: Continuously throughout the entire course of the program, all Lomitón restaurants were open from Iquique to Puerto Montt, with the aim of selling 270,000 sandwiches in about 20 hours. This goal was achieved, allowing the restaurant chain to donate CL$ 84,599,000 to Telethon.
  • Líder

: From the start of the event, at the Teatro Teleton, there was a huge sand hourglass was run through five times (for the five letters of the word LIDER that lit up, one by one, every time the last grain of sand fell), from the opening of all Líder's mega-markets on December 2, the campaign would levy 100% of the purchases of all products that were on Telethon. However, the most important time was when after 17:05, at which time the last letter lit up, during 1 hour and a half, the cost of all the purchases of each product was collected throughout Chile, which allowed Líder at 20:55hrs to hand in a donation of CL$ 250,387,198.
  • Disfruta: During the afternoon at the Central Tennis Court of the National Stadium, there was a challenge that asked 2,000 people to arrive (finally 5000 arrived) wearing the Chilean colours (white, blue and red) and a guitar. When the moment came, this crowd, to the rhythm of their guitars, sang first a well known song "Si vas para Chile" (Eng.: If you're for Chile), and then a popular advertising jingle about the Disfruta effervescent salts of that time. The fulfilment of this challenge meant that the company, to which this product was linked, donated CL$ 120 million for an advanced assisted walking system for disabled children.
  • Santa Isabel ("Besotón"):(Eng:Big Kiss) Also that day, but in the Playa El Sol de Viña del Mar, an task was completed that was probably the one which took all the applause, when 1,000 couples (men and women), each carrying a bag from Santa Isabel supermarkets, and all at the same time gave a kiss that lasted 1 minute. As a result, the supermarket company gave Telethon a donation of CL$ 25 million.

Curiosities

  • 1 year before Telethon 2000 there were plans to make a version for 1999, which was to have taken place on November 26 and November 27 of that year, but ended before completion. On the one hand because of the proximity to the presidential election, and on the other for the severe economic crisis in Chile, which is why Telethon 2000 was so important and momentous, it would have to make up for the two years without making the show.
