Uncertain, though almost certainly . The word may be attested in an AD 772 charter which mentions a place called Fuccerham, which possibly means “ of the fucker” or “ of the fucker”. The first verifiable use of the word in writing appears in Flen flyys and freris, a medieval poem containing the pseudo-Latin form ; first listed in a dictionary in 1598. Compare dialectal Norwegian , Swedish (earlier "fuck; thrust", nowadays ) and Dutch . It may go back to the Indo-European root } (source of Latin among many others), but the phonetic relations are inconclusive. A range of folk-etymological acronyms have been advanced (e.g. *"Fornication Under Consent of the King, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge"), all demonstrably false.
