History

Yuzhny was the first of the gold mines to be opened in Chukotka in 1950. Having started out as a normal business employing prospectors, the mines became part of Chaunchukotlag, the local division of the GULAG

system. As with many mining settlements, Yuzhny was officially abandoned in 1998, and is in the process of being formally liquidated since it is no longer profitable to extract gold in the area.
