The station was founded as Televisora del Yaqui on August 30, 1965 by the Azcarraga and Sáenz family. Its transmitter was originally located next to the studios and measured 200 m (656 ft) high and weighing 60 tonnes (66 ST) to just cover most of the city. The antenna was destroyed in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Kirsten on September 28, 1966; fortunately, there were no technical damages, which allowed the resumption of broadcasting days later with a temporary antenna.
In 1968, XHI-TV relocated its transmitter to Yucuribampo Hill to improve coverage and quality of the signal. In 1972, the station relocated to its present studios on Miguel Alemán Avenue in Ciudad Obregón.
