Woltjer (crater)

Woltjer is an impact crater
that is located in the northern latitude
s of the Moon
's far side. It is just attached to the southern outer rim of the larger crater Montgolfier
. To the southwest is Schneller
and to the east is Stoletov
.
This is a relatively recent impact compared to most of the craters on the far side, and the rim is still well-formed with little erosion. It is old enough, however, that its albedo
matches its surroundings and it lacks a ray system
. The inner wall has slumped in places and formed piles of talus
along the south. The interior floor has two lines of low ridges that begin in the southeast and curve up to the northwestern inner wall. There is a level patch in the southern floor near the inner wall.
Impact crater
In the broadest sense, the term impact crater can be applied to any depression, natural or manmade, resulting from the high velocity impact of a projectile with a larger body...
that is located in the northern latitude
Latitude
In geography, the latitude of a location on the Earth is the angular distance of that location south or north of the Equator. The latitude is an angle, and is usually measured in degrees . The equator has a latitude of 0°, the North pole has a latitude of 90° north , and the South pole has a...

Moon
The Moon is Earth's only known natural satellite,There are a number of near-Earth asteroids including 3753 Cruithne that are co-orbital with Earth: their orbits bring them close to Earth for periods of time but then alter in the long term . These are quasi-satellites and not true moons. For more...

Montgolfier (crater)
Montgolfier is a worn lunar impact crater that is located in the northern hemisphere of the Moon's far side. To the east-northeast is the crater Paraskevopoulos, and southwest of Montgolfier lies Schneller....
. To the southwest is Schneller
Schneller (crater)
Schneller is a lunar impact crater on the Moon's far side. It is located in the northern latitudes to the southwest of the crater Woltjer. This is a heavily worn and eroded crater that has a somewhat uneven rim with outward bulges to the southeast and northeast. The rim is nearly non-existent along...
and to the east is Stoletov
Stoletov (crater)
Stoletov is a lunar crater on the far side of the Moon. It is located in the northern hemisphere, less than one crater diameter to the north of Kulik. To the northwest of Stoletov is Montgolfier....

Albedo
Albedo , or reflection coefficient, is the diffuse reflectivity or reflecting power of a surface. It is defined as the ratio of reflected radiation from the surface to incident radiation upon it...
matches its surroundings and it lacks a ray system
Ray system
A ray system comprises radial streaks of fine ejecta thrown out during the formation of an impact crater, looking a bit like many thin spokes coming from the hub of a wheel. The rays can extend for lengths up to several times the diameter of their originating crater, and are often accompanied by...
. The inner wall has slumped in places and formed piles of talus
Scree
Scree, also called talus, is a term given to an accumulation of broken rock fragments at the base of crags, mountain cliffs, or valley shoulders. Landforms associated with these materials are sometimes called scree slopes or talus piles...

Satellite craters
By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Woltjer.Woltjer | Latitude | Longitude | Diameter |
