. The area was built in the 1960s to accommodate Dundee's expanding population. A lot of the housing was low rise, deck access flats, innovative for the time, built using the "Skarne" prefabrication system.

Between 1989 and 1995 it was one of the four areas chosen for the Scottish Office programme New Life for Urban Scotland. A lot of the deck access housing in the area was demolished as the area was remodelled.

Whitfield had two high rise tower block

s of flats, both constructed in 1969. In 2003 the tower block housing Quarryfield and Whitfield courts was demolished, and in 2004 the neighbouring tower block which housed Greenfield and Kellyfield courts followed. As of 2006 the area is undergoing redevelopment as part of a redevelopment plan and the area is seeing a rise in population.

Education

There are two secondary schools in the Whitfield area. To the north is Braeview Academy which was formerly called Whifield High School and in the very south is St Paul's Roman Catholic Academy School (formerly St Saviour's Roman Catholic High School, due to close and reopen on a new campus January 2009).
There are also two primary schools, Whitfield Primary School and Newfields Primary School (due to merge in spring 2012).
